AI in Design: A Double-Edged Sword [Infographic]

A recent survey by Santa Cruz Software underscores the transformative influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on the design industry.

Over 98% of the 400+ U.S.-based graphic designers surveyed reported that AI has significantly impacted their workflows, with 91% citing a positive return on investment (ROI) from AI tool adoption. Creative directors, in particular, view AI as a collaborative partner that augments human creativity rather than replacing it.

To stay competitive, 93% of designers have sought out AI training. Common applications of AI tools include image and video generation (67%), content creation (51%), and AI-powered design software (45%). These applications demonstrate AI’s potential to enhance efficiency and innovation.

However, ethical considerations remain paramount. While 65% of designers perceive AI as ethical, 24% harbor concerns. Issues such as copyright (55%), originality (46%), bias (34%), and privacy (41%) persist. To mitigate these risks, most designers (81%) are restricted to employer-approved AI tools, reflecting the industry’s growing emphasis on ethical standards.

Designers primarily utilize AI for specific tasks, such as idea generation (74%), client communication (51%), and repetitive tasks (43%). However, 68% still prefer human oversight for final design decisions.
